Description
Trout Unlimited is seeking a self-motivated, hardworking, and highly capable person to serve as Field Operations Assistant for California Inland Trout Program’s restoration implementation and monitoring field crew. The Operations Assistant plays a critical support role by ensuring field teams have the equipment, supplies, food, and information they need to operate efficiently and safely in remote settings. This position may assist with equipment organization and inventory, food planning and preparation, grocery and supply purchasing, data entry and management, and general logistical coordination before, during, and after field deployments. The ideal candidate is organized, adaptable, comfortable working independently, and enjoys supporting hands-on fieldwork that contributes directly to meadow and aquatic ecosystem restoration. This role will be based out of Bishop, California, and will report to the Sierra Restoration Project Manager.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support restoration implementation and monitoring crews by assisting with equipment and food purchase and organizing on an as-needed basis
- Organize, maintain, and inventory field equipment, tools, and supplies
- Assist with food planning for multi-day hitches, may include assisting with menu development, grocery shopping, and packing food for field crews
- Coordinate purchasing of groceries, field supplies, and miscellaneous materials in compliance with project budgets
- Assist with preparation, organizing, and loading of vehicles to ensure crews are properly equipped for field operations
- Support data management tasks, including data entry, file organization, quality control, and maintaining digital records
- Assist with pre- and post-field logistics, including equipment cleaning, repairs coordination, storage, and documentation
- Communicate effectively with field staff, project managers, and operations personnel
- Provide general logistical support as needed to ensure successful project implementation and monitoring efforts

Requirements
- Based in Bishop, CA
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to communicate effectively, critically assess tasks, and delegate to foster efficient and effective teamwork.
- Willingness and ability to work on an as-needed basis, manage time efficiently and operate independently with minimal supervision
- Valid driver’s license and own vehicle required (field vehicle will be supplied if needed, but must be able to travel to and from equipment storage)
Preferred
- Experience planning, organizing and executing field work, including developing meal plans and equipment lists for large crews.
- Experience leading and supervising field crews or volunteer groups while ensuring strong communication and a high quality of work.
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in environmental science, natural resource management, fisheries, or similar field, or equivalent related professional experience.
- Minimum of 2 years experience in field work in either scientific monitoring or hand-based restoration implementation, such as trails maintenance, fire, forest health, and other stream or vegetation management/enhancement.
