About the Role
St Vincent’s Language Services department provides interpreters to Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients across all hospital sites to enable them to communicate with their health providers and access the hospital’s services.

The classification ranges for this position vary from the below:
HS2 - HS21 ($33.78 - $37.35 per hour, plus casual loading)
HS3 - HS25 ($37.67 - $41.65 per hour, plus casual loading)

Your Contribution
You will be a NAATI certified interpreter and have extensive experience in health interpreting. Your duties include the provision of excellent and efficient interpreting for Chinese and Vietnamese speaking patients and working cooperatively in our dynamic staff team.

A valid Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check, or willing to obtain, is required for the position.

Almost half of St Vincent's patients come from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background. Almost 20% of these require an interpreter to assist them to communicate with their healthcare provider. Language Services department provides:

LOCAL WORK ENVIRONMENT

Interpreter Services provides interpreters for culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) patients across all departments at SVHM. The Interpreter Services Department upholds St Vincent’s commitment to cultural responsiveness and inclusiveness, and ensuring effective communication through providing high quality interpreter services.

POSITION PURPOSE

To provide a high standard of professional interpreting services to Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients who receive health care at St. Vincent’s.Reporting to the Manager Language Services/Chief Interpreter, key responsibiilites will include actively assisting in the administration of interpreter bookings, while working cooperatively in a multidisciplinary team to maintain and develop language service for LEP patients.

POSITION DUTIES

• Provide an efficient and effective interpreting service to Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients at St. Vincent’s
• Adherence to the Australian Institute of Interpreters & Translators  Code of Ethics
• Provide a coordinated, patient-centred and culturally appropriate interpreting service
• Contribute to the language service administrative procedures to enable an efficient and effective service to be provided to all SVHM departments

RESPONSIBILITY AREA 1: Interpreting

• Provide interpreting services which are accurate, confidential and impartial
• Adhere to the policies and procedures as required in the Interpreter Services department
• Contribute to quality activities within Interpreter Services
• Maintain and update medical terminology, knowledge of medical contexts, procedures and technology
• Knowledge of key health issues for CaLD patients at St. Vincent’s
• Ability to initiate action and work independently within a team, coordinating own workload
• Participate in staff professional development programs and educational workshops
• Participate in supervision of interpreting/translating student programs
• Check translations (proofread) as required
• Participate in continuous professional development to maintain recertification of qualifications as required by the National Accreditation Authority of Translators and Interpreters (NAATI)Ability to balance competing and conflicting priorities in managing interpreting workload
• Ability to travel across sites, when requested.

Performance Indicators:

• Ensure accurate, confidential and impartial interpreting services
• Ability to solve ethical dilemmas which can impact on a professional interpreting service
• Demonstrate understanding of medical terminology and interrelated medical, cultural and language issues
• Ability to initiate action and work independently
• Participation in team work as appropriate

RESPONSIBILITY AREA 2:  Administrative

• Maintain accurate data collection and records for performance Indicators and interpreter episodes of care, including data required  for Quality improvement programs and projects
• Participate in checking patient appointments on the Patient Registration System (PAS)  for interpreter workload.
• Computer literacy: knowledge of Word and related software
• Knowledge of SVHM IT systems to make the best use of technology to assist in administrative/booking/interpreting tasks
• Participation in SVHM email correspondence and intranet communication
• Provide administrative and other appropriate support  to the Manager of Language Services/ Chief Interpreter as required

Performance Indicators:

• Completion of monthly language statistics on PAS and administrative related data recording
• Participation in quality improvement activities
• Evidence of computer literacy and use of SVHM IT systems

RESPONSIBILITY AREA 3: Professional

• Adherence to SVHM policies, procedures and guidelines
• Meet HR standards of punctuality and attendance
• Ability to work cooperatively in a team
• Commitment to the values and health care philosophy of the Sisters of Charity
• Encourage LEP patients to request an interpreter if they have difficulty communicating in their preferred language
• Assist with continual education to SVHM staff on the importance of using interpreters (linked to DHHS and SVHM Language Services policy)

Performance Indicators:

• Attend staff and hospital meetings as required by the  Manger of Language Services/ Chief Interpreter
• Participate in St. Vincent’s projects allocated by the Manager Language Services/ Chief Interpreter when required
• Assist in completion of patient-related forms and explaining procedures as required by clinicians in interpreting assignments
• Check  translated material for accuracy before final printing, if appropriate qualification is held
• Provide information to SVHM staff and LEP patients on how to access Interpreter Services when appropriate

RESPONSIBILITY AREA 4: Workplace health and safety

• Maintains own health and safety in the workplace and adheres to OHS policies and procedures
• Commitment to Quality and Accreditation procedures and policies
• Understanding of emergency response procedures

Performance Indicators:

• Participates in annual OHS training
• Accesses and understands organisation policy and procedures in relation to Workplace Health & Safety
• Own practice demonstrated integration of workplace safety policies and legislation
• Participates fully in department quality activities

RESPONSIBILITY AREA 5: Actively engage consumers in the planning, delivery and evaluation of SVHM services

Performance Indicators:

• High level of consumer satisfaction with the level and nature of participation
• Ensure consumers are aware of their rights, responsibilities and how to provide feedback on the service provided

SELECTION CRITERIA

ESSENTIAL REGISTRATION, LICENSE OR QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

• Appropriate Tertiary qualification and/or NAATI certification
• Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Masters course in Interpreting/Translating      

OTHER ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Extensive knowledge of medical terminology and health contexts
• Ability to work cooperatively in a team
• Highly developed interpersonal communication skills
• Computer literacy: knowledge of IT systems (Word and related software, Outlook , PAS: patient administration system)
• Knowledge of the Victorian Public Health System
• Knowledge of medical terminology and medical contexts
• Demonstrated experience in health interpreting
• Demonstrated ability to balance competing and conflicting priorities in managing interpreter and administrative workload
• Knowledge of interpreter ethical issues and how they relate to service provision
• Demonstrated computer literacy and knowledge of  IT systems (Word and related software, Outlook (email)

OTHER NON ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

• Appropriate  NAATI certification) in a second language or translation is desirable
• Driver’s Licence
