Middle and Upper School Visual Arts
Part-Time Position (80%) – Beginning August 2026
Overview
The Spence School is seeking a part-time Visual Arts Teacher for its Middle and Upper School (grades 5-8), beginning August 2026. This position offers the opportunity to join a dynamic team of multidisciplinary artists who guide students through a curriculum grounded in artistic technique and experimentation. The ideal candidate is a practicing artist and lifelong learner with a collaborative spirit and a passion for teaching students how artmaking can be a transformative experience for themselves and their community.
Responsibilities
Teach general studio art and ceramics hand-building
Share in the upkeep of the art studios and kilns
Participate in department-wide initiatives related to equity, pedagogy, and curriculum
Work collaboratively with visual arts department to develop and maintain a culture of openness, mutual respect, kindness, and inquiry in the art studio
Attend faculty and art department meetings
Participate in school-wide events and professional development opportunities
QualificationsQualifications
Enjoys working with middle and upper school students and participating in school life
Experience teaching a range of media, with a focus on ceramics, painting, and drawing
Approaches work with optimism, energy, kindness, and a sense of humor
Demonstrates cultural competency and actively engages with and learns from people with diverse backgrounds and experiences
Values collaboration as essential to professional growth and enjoys working as part of a team
Possesses sustained experience teaching visual arts to middle school students
Has a master’s degree or equivalent professional experience
