Description
As Investment Principal, you’ll be the front-line partner for founders and investors, leading deals from first meeting through negotiation and close while ensuring every investment carries a clear thesis and measurable value. You’ll operate with the speed and conviction of a top-tier venture investor, but with the added firepower of corporate scale – helping portfolio companies unlock markets, customers, and growth beyond capital. This role gives you direct visibility and authority at the Investment Committee, with success defined by the quality of relationships you build, the strength of deals you lead, and the tangible impact created across the ecosystem.
Key Responsibilities
Thesis Ownership & Origination
- Define 1–2 conviction theses aligned to corporate strategy; build market maps, target lists, and signal trackers.
- Run a proactive sourcing engine via founders, funds, bankers, and operators; maintain a stage-gated pipeline with clear conversion metrics.
- Produce sharp internal notes that frame “why now, why us,” and shape IC agendas. (Cross-border exposure, incl. emerging markets, expected.)
Deal Leadership & Negotiation
- Lead diligence (commercial, product, tech, legal), build decision-grade memos and scenario models, and drive IC
- Recommend and lead/co-lead new investments within mandate: negotiate terms and docs (valuation, governance, investor protections, ESOP, info rights), balancing founder alignment and downside protection
- Close with discipline: TS → definitive docs → closing checklist → 100-day value plan. (Comfortable with local nuances – regulatory, FX, enforceability – when relevant.
- Orchestrate internal stakeholders through diligence and closing.
Portfolio Management & Value Creation
- Serve as director/observer where appropriate; set KPI cadence, surface risks early, and make follow-on/secondary/exit calls.
- Activate corporate advantages (distribution, data, brand, procurement) with measurable commercial outcomes.
- Maintain rolling health scores and traffic-light dashboards; ensure quarterly board/observer hygiene.
Qualifications
- Experience: 5 years+ in dealmaking with multiple led/co-led deals closed end-to-end.
- Communication: Writes tight memos; defends a view in 10 minutes with IC.
- Negotiator: Can run term sheets and SPAs/SHA: fluent in prefs, anti-dilution, pro-rata, governance.
- Judgment: Kills weak deals early; pairs pattern recognition with first-principles analysis.
- Operator empathy: Can pressure-test GTM, cohorts, hiring plans, and roadmaps with founders.
- Cross-border fluency: Comfortable in emerging markets; Spanish/Portuguese a plus but not required.
