The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking a Supervisor, Theater Production for our Education & Programs department. The Supervisor, Theater Production will be responsible for supervising all production aspects of the Museum’s theatrical programming and experiences ranging from auditions, casting, rehearsals and production scheduling. Working collaboratively with the Theater Technical Supervisor to ensure the highest quality productions in the Commons Theater.
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Team Management: Is the on-site theater performance team lead during programming, including on evenings and weekends. Responsible for hiring, training, and supervision of Performing Arts Educator staff and Program Coordinator. May supervise work study students.
- Budget Management: Manages and budgets for existing and future theatrical production needs.
- Documentation and Organization: Develops and produces theatrical production timelines and schedules and tracks and organizes inventory of puppets, costumes and props. Executes program reports including statistics such as attendance, weekly and season delivery of programs and evaluations.
- Planning, Scheduling and Coordination: Participates in the planning and scheduling for theatrical programming. Plans staffing schedules for theatrical programs and Theater space. Coordinates scheduling with Theater Technical Supervisor.
- Program Development: Collaborate in the development of and performance of live theatrical performances.
- Production Maintenance: Performs or supervises installation, de-installation, programming, maintenance, research and troubleshooting of non-technical production elements for Performing Arts live theatrical programs and NHM Commons Theater. Works with Sr. Manager, Arts Integration and Theater Technical Supervisor on the maintenance and repair of audio systems housed within full-suit cable-controlled and animatronic puppets.
This position has the following requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Theatre Arts or related field and/or three years professional experience with theatrical production and event coordination, including physical and movement-based theater, producing new theatrical works and collaborating with a Performance Arts team. Experience with full-suit puppets, or physical theater is highly desirable.
- Experience with educational program development within a theater environment.
- Has demonstrated ability to work with others on teams, across an organization and external audiences. Ability to collaborate effectively with all levels within an organization. Must be personable and possess the ability to interact effectively with children of all ages, their families, clients, staff and other Museum visitors. Must have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills. Must act with integrity and an ability to carry oneself with the demeanor, decorum and professionalism needed for the position and its interaction with others.
- Must be extremely organized and able to work under pressure and within tight deadlines. Must be able to work efficiently and manage multiple projects at once, which may be at different stages of design and execution. Has the ability to effectively manage extensive volumes of material in a systematic fashion.
- Must have an interest and capacity to understand and share a range of Museum content.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, peer reviewed primary literature, or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business/professional correspondence, and procedure manuals.
