2026-03-11 11:59 PMCBC News Syndicated Audio is looking for a creative editorial leader to join our team, someone who is adept at building relationships, and has sharp programming skills, exceptional news judgement and an audience growth mindset.
Reporting to the Executive Producer, Syndicated Audio, you are a hands-on leader who is agile in assigning breaking news and factual content that is informed by news of the day. You are a skilled interviewer, who knows how to create questions that lead to an authentic interaction between local program hosts and their guests, and that’s reflected in every script you write or review. You are equally adept at producing rich audio that keeps the audience engaged.
You have worked in a region and have a strong understanding of the key role the unit plays in meeting audience needs coast-to-coast-to coast in your story choices and the people who are asked to share them. You are constantly seeking out new perspectives and push for inclusiveness in the chase.
Communication, relationship building and feedback are central to this role. In addition to providing daily editorial support to the Syndicated Audio team, you will work closely with program producers, journalists and freelancers across the country. You coordinate with regional and network teams to champion CBC journalism and share best practices.
This is a permanent full-time position, based anywhere in Canada with daily access to a CBC facility. The hours are 11:00 ET to 19:45 ET Monday to Friday however may be modified to meet production needs. This position is on-site, with some flexibility for occasional telework.
What you’ll be doing:
Assign and coordinate daily editorial content on the most important national and international stories of the day to support 60 audio current affairs programs across six time zones, including interview preparation, audio-editing, and source-checking
Attend story meetings for daily, upcoming and special-event coverage. Suggest story ideas, discuss story angles and formats with your colleagues and leverage data to ensure story choices resonate with audiences.
Oversee the story development process and scheduling, in collaboration with the executive producer and works with producers and guests to refine focus, angles and structure.
Helps develop the pitching and story creation skills of producers and APs.
Writes, vets and reviews scripts, stories and question lines, ensuring adherence to CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
Works with freelancers, columnists and other on-air contributors to support the best delivery and performance.
Communicates with CBC News across regions and platforms, including the assignment desk for access to CBC journalists.
Leads regular pitch meetings, manages programming calendars and outlooks. Sends daily outlooks and assignment notes to regional programming teams and helps to troubleshoot when issues arise.
Helps guide and support staff through change, team development.
Exercises editorial responsibility as delegated by the Executive producer and management
Maintain a robust contact list that reflects a broad range of perspectives, regional representation and potential guests from equity-deserving groups
Obtain and organize technical and production resources required
We're looking for someone who:
Has at least five years of recent, significant leadership experience in a fast-paced news environment, particularly in roles involving breaking news and large teams. Experience in local current affairs is an asset.
Brings a deep and nuanced understanding of Canadian politics, world events, geography, and history, coupled with strong cultural awareness and sensitivity.
Demonstrated talent as a programmer with an ear for pacing, tone, presentation and production.
Superior writing, editorial and production skills.
Ability to identify and executive relevant, audience-focused stories which reflect issues being discussed by the general public.
A track record of creativity and experimentation with different audio formats, story treatments and interview styles.
Exceptional critical thinking, including problem solving, crisis management and editorial judgment.
Thoughtfulness around servicing audiences, which is the core purpose of public broadcasting.
A solid knowledge of CBC Journalistic Standards and practices.
Highly developed audio production skills.
Instills in their team that Canadians are very interested in learning more about each other, and recognizes the universal appeal of good stories.
Exhibits stellar communication and collaboration skills, essential for working across diverse teams and regions.
Superior coaching and mentoring skills with both developing and veteran journalists, freelancers and guests.
Experience working with hosts, guests and programming teams, providing guidance and meaningful feedback.
Exception communication and interpersonal skills.
A university degree or college diploma in journalism, or a related industry, audio production and programming and experience in local current affairs is an asset.
